Cabinet Painting & Refinishing in Burnsville, MN and the Twin Cities Metro

Cabinet refinishing is not wall painting with the furniture taken out. Kitchen cabinets live in a hot, greasy, heavily handled environment, and the coating has to be formulated, primed and cured for that reality.

The reason this work lasts or fails is almost always preparation. Grease and cooking residue that is not fully removed will cause a topcoat to release, no matter how good the paint is.

Common problems this solves

These are the problems homeowners actually call about, and the reason the preparation matters more than the finish coat.

Kitchens that feel dated but are structurally sound

When the cabinet boxes and doors are solid, refinishing changes the entire room for a fraction of replacement cost and far less disruption.

Grease film that ruins adhesion

Invisible cooking residue is the most common cause of peeling cabinet paint. Degreasing is a critical step, not a wipe down.

Grain and texture showing through a smooth finish

Open-grain wood can telegraph through a finish. Where the desired look calls for it, grain filling before priming produces a smoother result.

Worn finish at high-touch edges

Drawer fronts and door edges wear first. A proper primer and durable topcoat system handles those surfaces as a system rather than a single coat.

How we prepare and work

The steps below are the actual sequence, not marketing language. Skipping any one of them is where cabinet painting & refinishing jobs go wrong.

1

Removal and labeling

Doors and drawers are removed and labeled so they return to the correct position, and the work area is set up for controlled spraying.

2

Degreasing

All surfaces are degreased thoroughly, including edges and corners where cooking film accumulates.

3

Sanding and grain filling

Surfaces are sanded to create a mechanical bond, and grain filling is applied where the finish specification calls for a smoother result.

4

Priming

A bonding primer suited to the substrate and topcoat is applied, which is what keeps the finish from releasing later.

5

Sprayed finish and reassembly

Finish coats are sprayed for an even, factory-like appearance, then cabinets are reassembled and hardware refitted after proper cure.

Frequently asked questions

How long does cabinet refinishing take?

It depends on the number of doors and drawers, the condition of the existing finish and the coating system specified. Preparation and cure time make up much of the schedule, which is why cabinet projects are not a one-day job.

Is painting cabinets as good as replacing them?

It depends on the cabinets. If the boxes, doors and hardware are in sound condition, refinishing delivers a significant change at a fraction of replacement cost with far less disruption. If the cabinets are failing structurally or the layout needs to change, replacement is the better answer, and we will say so.

Can you change the color completely?

Yes, refinishing allows a full color change. The specified coating system and primer are chosen to suit the new color and the surface.

Will the finish peel like the last job did?

Peeling is usually a preparation failure, most often inadequate degreasing. That is why degreasing, sanding and the correct bonding primer are treated as separate required steps.

What about the cabinet boxes and interiors?

The scope for boxes, interiors and shelving is defined in your proposal. Not every project includes interior refinishing, and we state exactly what is covered.
